Dental Laboratory Technician
Dental Laboratory Technician
I would like to take this opportunity to familiarize you with my professional experience regarding technical knowledge and skill set.
The journey of my profession began with a dream, proceeding through to education, then experience, culmination at the pinnacle of business ownership and beyond into the high tech digital dentistry arena.
Many great things begin with a dream. My dream was to choose a career that was both artistic and technical.
Coupled with a dream, was a strong desire of mine to choose a career that allowed me to make a difference by helping people.
As a former business owner and later as a department head, I have gained experience in management, administrative functions, training and areas relating to personnel.
Operating my own business, I had to perform many functions out of necessary, one of which involved the area of finance, which included, billing, statements, sales, quarterly reports, accounts payable and accounts receivable.
My experience in surveying and designing is extensive and spans several decades. This experience was gained through my association with fast paced and high volume laboratories. This included being a client liaison, reading and evaluating prescriptions as well as calls to clients regarding case planning.
Over the years, I had the opportunity in waxing every conceivable type of case. From all metals to swinglocks, including various types of attachments and hybrid/combination cases.
My casting experience began the old fashioned way, with the acetylene torch. Later I progressed to induction casting machines.
Over 20 years of experience with laser welding enabled me to weld chrome-cobalt cases as well as gold and titanium. I also have experience with phaser welding, electric and torch welding.
Perhaps the most challenging aspect of chrome partial fabrication is the finishing process. Here is where I have the most experience. This job is what separates the average technician from the professional. This is where I excel.
Recently I have begun working in digital dentistry as it relates to CAD CAM. Most of my training in designing was with 3Shape. I also have experience working with Wieland milling machines in producing ceramic crowns, copings and bridges, milled wax crowns and PMMA (poly methyl-methacrylate acrylic) temporary crowns and bridges.
I had the opportunity to delve into acrylic dentures when my employment situation changed. This coupled with a semester of a college coursework in dentures, gave me a broader set of skills in the dental lab field.
An opportunity arose for me to take advantage of learning and working in a crown and bridge laboratory. During this time I was fortunate enough to broaden my experience by branching out. During this time, I progressed into manafind a small lab and gaining valuable experience in this area of dentistry.
Despite the fact that I do not have actual lab work experience in orthodontics, I have taken a college course semester which provided me with well rounded practical knowledge of orthodonture.
Recently I had the opportunity to be a Customer Service Representative in a Start Up Company that provides systems to orthodontists to be able to produce aligners quickly with the patients still in the waiting room.
When gained employment at a start up, I was involved in R&D and was able to train in 3D printing. Ingested various printers and made recommendations to the manufacturers.
Digital Dentistry is the future and the future has arrived. Rarely does one have the opportunity to transition into a progressive area of one's career. I am fortunate to have had that opportunity. My somewhat limited experience in designing was with 3Shape.
I have two years training in a technical college which offered an Associate in Science degree in dental technology.
Having a positive outlook for the future is an optimistic viewpoint that gives me pleasure and utmost confidence, a viewpoint which I cultivate. Dreaming of new horizons and a better tomorrow is my vision. With vision, you can plan and with planning there is hope.
Throughout all the years in my profession, I always tried to maintain a sense of humor, without which, I would have never made it as far as I did. Although I am very serious about my work, I try not to take myself too seriously. Humor adds a healthy balance to today's stress filled life.
